On the scoreboard in Nairobi, host nation Kenya sat in second place. They lost the African Women's Continental Championship final to Egypt, yet both teams walked off the court holding a ticket to the 2027 World Cup. I once sat in the stands clapping; now I sit at the commentary desk so that others do not have to clap alone, and nights like Nairobi are why I have stayed in this job for more than four decades. The other four continental qualifiers closed almost simultaneously, in Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul, Tianjin and Santo Domingo. When the last whistle sounded, FIVB had 18 names in hand for the 2027 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Cup — more than half of the 32-team field, with the second phase of qualification yet to begin. HOW A CONTINENTAL TICKET IS DEFINED The 2027 finals will be co-hosted by Canada and the United States. The first three berths were reserved for reigning world champions Italy — winners of the 2026 World Championship — plus hosts Canada and the United States. The following fifteen berths were allocated to the five continental confederations, three each, decided through the continental championships staged in 2026. That allocation turns every continental championship into a narrow gate: three tickets, no more. In confederations with a dense field of strong teams, three tickets mean a side good enough for the finals can still stay home. In developing confederations, three tickets are a wider door than at any previous point. The 18 qualified teams: Italy, Canada, United States, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Thailand, China, Japan, Egypt, Kenya, Cameroon, Serbia, Poland, Turkiye, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia. The remaining 14 berths will be decided in the next qualification phase. FIVE CONTINENTS, FIVE DIFFERENT ROADS In Santo Domingo, the four semifinalists of the NORCECA Women's Continental Championship were Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and World Cup hosts Canada and the United States. With the two host berths already reserved, the two continental tickets went to Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Cuba finished third, the Dominican Republic fourth, Puerto Rico fifth — and that fifth place delivered the third continental berth to Puerto Rico. In Tianjin, Thailand and host China reached the final, meaning both qualified early. Thailand won the final to take the Asian crown, China finished second. Japan won the bronze medal match and took Asia's third berth. The Asian title left the host nation's hands on their own floor, a rare outcome at a tournament where China entered as the top seed. In Nairobi, Egypt and Kenya reached the final and both qualified. Egypt won the title, Kenya finished as runner-up at home, and Cameroon won the bronze medal match to claim Africa's third ticket. In Istanbul, the four European Championship semifinalists were Serbia, Poland, Turkiye and Italy, who already held a berth as reigning world champions. Europe's three tickets therefore went to Serbia, Poland and Turkiye. The podium order read Turkiye, Italy, Serbia. In Rio de Janeiro, by the penultimate competition day of the South American Championship, the three qualified teams were already known: Brazil, Argentina and Colombia. The following day they finished as gold, silver and bronze medallists respectively. READING THE MAP OF 18 BERTHS The continental distribution shows a picture less balanced than the 32-team label suggests. North and Central America and the Caribbean contribute 5 teams, thanks to two host berths plus three continental ones. Europe has 4, including Italy and three qualifiers. Asia, South America and Africa have 3 each. Isolating tickets won purely on results, Asia and Europe stand level at three apiece. Asian women's volleyball is not behind in its ability to compete directly, despite the enormous gap in the number of participating teams. The notable point lies in the ratio between entrants and available tickets. Europe has the deepest pool of strong teams by any ranking measure, yet its allocation remains three, plus Italy's berth. Africa holds three tickets for a region Egypt and Kenya have largely dominated for years. Distributing tickets by confederation makes the chance of reaching the finals depend more on which continent you play in than on how strong you are. For someone who follows Southeast Asian women's volleyball, the list has an obvious gap. Thailand is the region's only representative among the 18. Vietnam's women's national team is not on the list. Over the past years I have watched Vietnamese women's matches across regional and continental tournaments, taking notes at every open training session I was allowed to attend, and the current gap lies in roster depth more than in any single outstanding individual. THE CONTRARIAN ANGLE: IS THREE BERTHS PER CONTINENT FAIR? Expanding the finals to 32 teams is usually presented as progress for opportunity. Looking at the 18 qualified teams, the story is more complicated. Two host berths for Canada and the United States send both teams to the finals without passing through any qualifier. Italy's berth as reigning world champions also sits outside the European pathway. Three of the 18 tickets therefore do not come from 2026 results. The rest of the story is money. A 32-team finals in North America generates a far larger volume of matches for broadcast platforms, and that is why the format exists. But more matches do not automatically produce more matches of quality. With three tickets per continent fixed, a European team capable of reaching a world quarterfinal may still have to wait for the later phase, while a team from a less competitive continent qualifies after two wins at its continental championship. Equality between confederations is not the same as equality of standard. Equality does not mean everyone reaching the finish line together, but everyone starting from the same line. In women's volleyball, that starting line still depends on the passport of your continental confederation. WHAT TO WATCH IN THE REMAINING 14 BERTHS The remaining 14 berths will be decided in the next phase, and that is the most unpredictable part. Once continental qualifying closes, strong teams without tickets enter a race based on international results, where every match at a world or continental event carries weight. For emerging women's volleyball nations, this phase matters no less than a championship. The court does not ask about gender, only whether a person dares to stand up. In Nairobi, Kenya lost the final and still qualified. In Tianjin, Thailand won on the home floor of the continent's strongest team. Both images sit on the same day of the international calendar, and both show that women's volleyball is changing faster than the rankings have time to reflect.
