LA 2028: Six Men's Volleyball Berths Are Filled, But the World Ranking Tells a Different Story

In the list of six men's volleyball teams that have secured berths for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, the spread on the FIVB World Ranking runs from No. 1 to No. 30. I wrote that number into my notebook before typing a single line, because it says more than any summary wire report.

Poland sits at No. 1 in the world. Tunisia sits at No. 30. Both already hold tickets. Somewhere between them, France, the reigning Olympic champion from Paris 2026, and Italy do not yet appear on the list.

After 44 years watching this sport, I see something familiar. Every Olympic cycle, the list of qualified teams is an administrative document, not a professional assessment. It tells you who finished the paperwork, not who will beat whom.

Injury is a fact. An injury announcement is a text that needs verification. The same applies here: a berth is a fact, and its meaning is a text that needs verification.

What I will track over the next two years is not the six names already in, but the entry list for the 2027 World Cup. If France and Italy are there, the tournament becomes a fight for survival.
